?Wildfires: How We Can Reduce the Impact and Help Our Communities

What can we do?

Small actions can make a big difference:

  • Don't light fires or use disposable BBQs in the countryside, particularly during dry periods.
  • Take all rubbish home and never leave glass, cigarettes or other flammable items behind.
  • Keep gardens and outdoor areas tidy, removing dry vegetation and anything that could easily catch fire.
  • Follow local fire safety advice and respect any restrictions or temporary bans.
  • Know your surroundings and consider how you would leave safely if a fire approached your area.

How can we help as a community?

When wildfires occur, communities can make a real difference by:

  • Keeping roads and access routes clear for fire engines and emergency vehicles.
  • Checking on vulnerable neighbours, particularly older people or anyone who may need help following evacuation advice.
  • Sharing official information, rather than unverified updates or rumours on social media.
  • Following evacuation or safety instructions quickly if asked to leave an area.
  • Staying away from active wildfire areas so emergency crews can work safely and without obstruction.
  • Supporting local emergency services and community organisations through legitimate fundraising or volunteering opportunities when help is requested.

Most importantly, if you see a fire, move to safety and call 999, giving the location as accurately as possible.

Wildfire prevention is everyone's responsibility. By taking simple precautions, looking out for our neighbours and giving emergency services the space they need to work, we can help reduce the impact of wildfires on our communities.

Together, we can help protect our communities, countryside and emergency responders.
