No-Prep Rainy Day Lesson Plans for a Wet September in the Classroom

Icebreakers for a Rainy September Lesson

When you’re meeting a new class for the first time, these quick games help build rapport:

  • Two Truths and a Tall Tale – Pupils share two real facts and one made-up one; the class guesses which is false.

  • Alphabet Challenge – As a group, list words linked to the current topic for each letter of the alphabet.

Why it works: low prep, fun, and effective across primary and secondary.

Creative Writing Rainy Day Prompts

For wet play or indoor lessons, writing sparks imagination:

  • The Umbrella Mystery – “A forgotten umbrella is left in the classroom. What happens when you open it?”

  • Weather Superheroes – Pupils design a hero who controls the rain and write a comic strip or short story.

These work especially well in KS2 and can be adapted for KS3.

Indoor Movement Activities for Wet Play

Missing outdoor break? Try safe, classroom-friendly movement tasks:

  • Four Corners Quiz – Label each corner A–D; pupils move to their chosen answer.

  • Rainy Day Fitness – Quick stretches, chair yoga, or “Simon Says” with weather actions (raindrop = crouch, lightning = jump).

Keeps energy up without losing control of the class.

Group Challenges for Supply Teachers

Team activities encourage problem-solving and collaboration:

  • STEM Tower Build – Using only paper or tape, which group can build the tallest tower?

  • Word Builder – From a long word like precipitation, pupils create as many smaller words as possible.

Great for KS2 and KS3 when you want structured teamwork.

Calm Rainy Day Finishers

Rainy days can leave classes excitable — end calmly with:

  • Mindful Colouring Sheets – Keep a few handy in your supply folder.

  • Gratitude Raindrops – Pupils write one positive thought on a paper raindrop; build a class “cloud display”.

Helps bring the room back to focus before handover.

Supply Teacher Pro Tip from Education Supply Pool

Always carry a “rainy day survival kit”:

  • colouring or puzzle sheets

  • dice for games

  • a short story or poem

  • a ready-to-go quiz template

It ensures you’re prepared for wet play, indoor PE, or last-minute cover.

With these rainy day lesson plans for supply teachers, you’ll feel confident walking into any UK classroom this September. At Education Supply Pool, we’re here to support our supply staff with resources, ideas, and guidance — whatever the weather.
